Review of the year

2022 has been another very challenging year for people needing care. Our small team has worked tirelessly to make sure older people’s voices are heard and to push for their rights to be respected.

We can’t do this without your support. Thank you for all you have done to support the charity this year!

A summary of some of the impact we had this year:

  • Our campaign to End Isolation In Care has mobilised cross-party support for a new legal right to a Care Supporter – the Care Minister is reviewing options to take this forward after meeting with us, Rights For Residents and John’s Campaign

  • Our event in Parliament on this resulted in 60+ MPs writing to the Government in support

  • R&RA’s lobbying led to significant improvements to Government visiting guidance, including better access during outbreaks and relaxation on mask wearing

  • Our helpline empowered families across the country to speak up and have their rights respected, including a stroke survivor who secured access to a wheelchair in her care home using human rights law

  • We wrote to local leaders on behalf of a coalition of organisations reminding them of their legal duties to protect wellbeing, calling for an end to isolation

  • Our evidence to Parliament’s Joint Committee on Human Rights was heavily quoted in their hard-hitting report on human rights in care settings

  • Expressed our disappointment with the CQC, once again, in another letter to their chief executive, about their inadequate guidance on managing infection in care homes

  • Held our first in-person member’s meeting since the pandemic, dedicated to thanking retiring Chair, Judy Downey, for her years of service to the charity

  • R&RA secured core participant status for the upcoming UK Covid-19 Inquiry, where we will ensure that the failures to protect the rights of older people needing care are investigated

  • We worked with a coalition of organisations calling for the Human Rights Act to be protected and lobbied against the harmful Bill of Rights Bill, which has now been deprioritised by the Prime Minister

  • Submitted evidence to over half a dozen Government consultations and inquiries including on the care workforce crisis, care costs and advocacy

Exciting changes in 2023

Exciting changes are underway for R&RA next year. Including a new name for the charity, a new look and a new website. We will also be growing the team to have a much bigger impact for people needing care. Watch this space for details!

In the meantime, happy new year to all our supporters. We look forward to working with you in 2023!
